John and I were out first thing yesterday morning. While we had only a mild dusting of snow when we left, we soon ran into very poor driving conditions so headed back to Niagara Falls. We ended up shooting at the School of Horticulture.
On another note, I am in the processing of updating this website to correspond with the design of my professional website, http://www.ChrisEmpey.com.

This portrait of Dave was shot last week. While practicing my multi light setup on a rock, Dave was gracious enough to offer himself as a model and let me get a bunch of practice shots of him. we were at the Upper Niagara River where this photo of the Niagara Falls skyline was taken as the light was going down.

John and I revisted the abandoned house I featured not too long ago. The light was quit flat but still had an opportunity to grab some shots I didn't take last time.
This one bothers me a little, I feel the vertical board on the right should be on the left. I could rotate the image, but then the lighting would be wrong.

06. Tower (Litho)
This is another photo processed to be similiar to a high contrast litho print. This is again the Casino Niagara Tower (formerly Kodak Tower) in Niagara Falls.
Maple Leaf Village was a staple of Niagara Entertainment in the 80's. I remember the excitement when we were able to go as a family, then again later when I would start to meet with friends there. I remember being frightened in the tower the first time when I was quite small.
This icon of Niagara is currently a giant billboard for the casino located just off of Clifton Hill where another Ferris wheel has been erected similiar in size to the one that sat in Maple Leaf Village.

05. An Old Observation Tower
This is the top of the old Maple Leaf Village observation tower in Niagara Falls, now Casino Niagara. The observation tower has not been functional since Maple Leaf Village closed. There was talk of tearing it down a few years ago due to safety concerns, but repairs were completed in order for the sign to remain erected. It is now really just a 341' billboard for Casino Niagara.

13. A Little Wet
I should really hava better image for Friday the 13th, but alas, I have another leaf, in black and white, with rain drops on it. We have had a little more than rain drops the past two days though. I had a little snow on my car after leaving work yesterday, and this morning I had to brush off my windows to clear the snow. That was in Niagara Falls. In Buffalo, just 20 minutes down the road, there was 220,000 people without power, and up to 24 inches of snow. And they talk of global warming!

10. Self Portrait #4
I had some portraits to do for homework this week... I am always an available model for myself. I really need to get a decent background.

08. Clouds in the Sky
In keeping with my attempts to recreate the infrared look, I dug around through some older images last night and found this one that was suitable for transformation. I think it is missing a subject, but the look is what I was after.
I posted this originally back in May, in colour. You can see that here.

07. Twenty Mile Creek
A shot of Twenty Mile creek near Balls Falls. I like the conversion to Black and White on this one much better than the colour version. Having shot some Infrared film in the past, this is very similiar.

This idea came to me last night, though I don't know where it originated from, I am not a coffee drinker.

26. Stairs of Escher
I am not sure if MC Escher modelled his paintings on the Museum of Natural History in London, or if the Museum of Natural History in London was designed based on the artist's work, or it is just that this view produces that effect.

14. Plaster, Sewer and Drains
While I have been playing around with black and white this week, I also had a renewed interest in slides when I picked some up from the lab. The colours were so vivid! I'll see what I can do about scanning a few shots that I don't otherwise have in digital.

08. Katie
Portraits are one of my toughest challenges. Technically, my skills are decent. However, posing and working with a model I find very difficult, I am sure it is the introvert in me.
This is Katie, one of two models I had a chance to photograph this morning. I was happy with the portrait in colour, but want to explore the world of black and white a little more closely. It may be part of the lull I have been feeling that I talked about yesterday.

11. Staircase
I went out this morning with John and Scott. We found a couple of Eastern Tailed Blue's and a Sulphar, but that was about it. Saw a few dragonflies flying as well... looks like the season is almost over for the insects.
All of which has nothing to do with this picture, which is a staircase outside of the abandoned Rosberg's Department store in Niagara Falls.

09. Downtown Niagara Falls
Dave and I were out shooting downtown last night for a short while. Our goal was the old Police station on Park Street and Zimmerman Avenue and the old Rosberg's department store on Queen Street and Erie Avenue, though I only got one or two shots of that one.
This shot is looking up Erie from Zimmerman. The older buildings and the derelict sign caught my attention. This was one of the first shots before I moved in and grabbed some detail shots of the signs. I wasn't sure how to treat this photo, and came up with three other version I was liked. This was my favourite.

08. A Little Wrinkly
The 1.6 multiplier effect of the digital sensor on my 10D allows me to crop in tightly to shots I would not normally be able to get. This photo of an elephant at the Toronto Zoo would have needed to be taken with a 480mm lens, which is too rich for my pocketbook! However, I really do miss the wide angle shots that I can't get with my current lenses.
I was looking at my old Pentax ESII last night, for which I have a very wide 21mm, and some very nice prime lenses... I may have to shoot some film soon!

19. Railing Detail
This is a detail shot of one of the railings in London's Museum of Natural History. It is one of the most beautiful buildings I have been in. The ornate construction is amazing. I could spend days there just photographing the building, and probably a week or doing viewing it's immense exhibits.

I have been reluctant to post this one, though I really like it. I have had nothing but good comments from those that have seen it. I just wish I hadn't cut off the bottom of the wing.

This is another shot from Casino Niagara that I took with Dave the other night. I envisioned these photos as Black and White when I shot them, though I still really like the various colours in the rust.
Yesterday's shot from the same location.

Scott and I were out this morning. Too warm for the bugs we are after, but it turned out to be a nice sunrise at Charles Daly Park, and I got a few nice shots of this building at Balls Falls Conservation Area.

09. Shadow of Fence
This week has been a pretty long one, I have being doing a lot of work at my parents house. Getting home so late, I really have not had a chance to shoot anything.
So... this was shot last summer during Construction Season in Toronto. I was going for a high contrast look, similiar to Kodak Technical Pan film can give.

18. Driftwood
Shot early morning, this piece of driftwood was well worn. A perfect candidate for black and white with the holes and the sand on the top.
I think my implementation was a little too dark though. Still unsure of it myself.

05. Rose and Shadow
Normally a harsh shadow like the one in the photo is not desirable in an image. For this one though I wanted to incorporate the shadow as a design element.
The image did not work in colour, so a conversion to black in white made the needed change.

This was shot in my studio while playing around with some lighting. I wasn't happy with what I was seeing on the camera screen but still wanted to see what I could make of the images. I am happy with the results.

Still sick today. I would love for nothing more than to get outside but my body is not allowing it. Great way to start a vacation!
Another basement studio shot. I am not sure if I like this better after making it monochrome or before. Any opinions?

16. A Piece of the Past

11. Self Portrait #2
Keeping up with my self portrait exercise...
I have converted this to a duotone because I wasn't sure if I like the colour in it. A straight Black and White was also not quite striking enough for my taste's.
Those who have known me for a long time may remember this pose. I have a similiar shot from 10 or 11 years ago which I think was a stronger image.

17. Ornamental Iron
Again, taken in Toronto, the shot itself was uninteresting in colour. I've created the bluish Duotone and played with levels a little bit to add some depth. Still not sure if I like it.
As for the house, I have over 100 new holes in my walls courtesy of the insulators yesterday.

This is another shot taken at the Niagara Falls Aviary on the weekend. I played around with modifying the color space (now greyscale). Not sure if I like it as it is, it might be a little too warm.
