02. Winter Wonderland
John and I were out first thing yesterday morning. While we had only a mild dusting of snow when we left, we soon ran into very poor driving conditions so headed back to Niagara Falls. We ended up shooting at the School of Horticulture.
On another note, I am in the processing of updating this website to correspond with the design of my professional website, http://www.ChrisEmpey.com.

This portrait of Dave was shot last week. While practicing my multi light setup on a rock, Dave was gracious enough to offer himself as a model and let me get a bunch of practice shots of him. we were at the Upper Niagara River where this photo of the Niagara Falls skyline was taken as the light was going down.

04. Wanna Go This Way?
Found about 20 minutes from my home, this is not a place that looks very friendly. Don't think I would want to be here at night. Well, unless I had my camera. :)
Happy Birthday Nicole.

12. Authentic African Mask
Well, I don't know how authentic they are, but these are sold in a souvenir shop on Clifton Hill in Niagara Falls. I am pretty sure Native Canadians didn't wear these...but everything can be a souvenir in Niagara Falls!

07. Picket Fence
The weather has been cold and uninviting for a long time. Though I have been shooting at home, I am running out of images to post. I have some flower growing in the front window that are starting to bloom, so maybe I can get a shot of those soon.

30. Nuts. Black and White.
Another shot similiar to yesterday. This was going to be the shot I used for the competition but ended up liking the warm tones of the yesterday's better. Well, until today. So it goes.

21. Decay #10
So, I think that I have posted all that I can of this decayed, abanonded farm house. That is not to say I won't shoot there again, there are many more photographs to capture. I will just take a break from posting them.
December 17, 2006
17. Decay #6
John and I revisted the abandoned house I featured not too long ago. The light was quit flat but still had an opportunity to grab some shots I didn't take last time.
This one bothers me a little, I feel the vertical board on the right should be on the left. I could rotate the image, but then the lighting would be wrong.

06. Tower (Litho)
Maple Leaf Village was a staple of Niagara Entertainment in the 80's. I remember the excitement when we were able to go as a family, then again later when I would start to meet with friends there. I remember being frightened in the tower the first time when I was quite small.
This icon of Niagara is currently a giant billboard for the casino located just off of Clifton Hill where another Ferris wheel has been erected similiar in size to the one that sat in Maple Leaf Village.
November 5, 2006
05. An Old Observation Tower
This is the top of the old Maple Leaf Village observation tower in Niagara Falls, now Casino Niagara. The observation tower has not been functional since Maple Leaf Village closed. There was talk of tearing it down a few years ago due to safety concerns, but repairs were completed in order for the sign to remain erected. It is now really just a 341' billboard for Casino Niagara.

I spent a lot of time trying to identify this leaf. From everything that I have read, I believe it is from a sassafras tree.
I could be wrong though.

21. Long Way Down...Reprise BW
Photography has been very slow (and uninspiring) for me recently. Hopefully my shoot tomorrow will bring some more exciting work.
This is a similiar shot to what I posted yesterday, only with a Black and White conversion.
October 13, 2006
13. A Little Wet
I should really hava better image for Friday the 13th, but alas, I have another leaf, in black and white, with rain drops on it. We have had a little more than rain drops the past two days though. I had a little snow on my car after leaving work yesterday, and this morning I had to brush off my windows to clear the snow. That was in Niagara Falls. In Buffalo, just 20 minutes down the road, there was 220,000 people without power, and up to 24 inches of snow. And they talk of global warming!
October 12, 2006
We have had a fair amount of rain recently and as the leaves have been falling, haven't had a chance to photograph them. So I took a few minutes yesterday to go out and do a little shooting.
Still not sure as to why I am depicting the fall colours in black and white this year?

25. A Nice Walk
This is the road leading in to a cemetary in Sherktson. We drove in early Sunday morning and I liked the rural feel of it. Wood and wire fence on one side, over grown farmers field on the other, over hanging trees. I may photograph it again again one day, only looking up into the cemetary instead of from the cemetary looking out.

This abandoned gas station appears that it was abandoned in a hurry. Looking in the windows of the adjoining variety store, there appears to be magazines on the rack, gum in boxes and old 1.5 liter bottles of coke and pepsi in the refrigerator.

18. The Corran at Spirit Rock
This is a second shot from the same location as yesterday's image, The Corran at Spirit Rock on the Bruce Peninsula. The ruins were beautiful, though the mid-morning light against the gray of the old walls was pretty stark. This would be a beautiful location for model photos.

14. Oakes Garden
Sir Harry Oakes was one of the driving forces for tourist development in Niagara Falls and aside from luring the tourists to Niagara Falls, he also gave back to the city. This photo is of Oakes Garden Theater which was recently the location of two episodes of the Live with Regis and Kelly daytime talk show. There is a great view of Niagara Falls from the theater and it is only a 5 minute walk to the further Horsehoe Falls.

11. Balconies near Niagara
I have wanted to shoot more around Niagara Falls even though generally the city is not that photogenic. However, the various hotels and attractions provide some nice possibilities for repitition and patterns. This is the Best Western Fallsview on Stanley Avenue.
June 9, 2006
Even though I live in Niagara Falls, I don't take that many photos of my community. Over the next couple of days, I will be posting various shots in and around Niagara Falls. Some of Hotels, tourist attractions and the like, and this one. An abandoned building. For the life of me, I can't even remember what it had been.

25. Wheels and Gears
I posted the colour version of this photo a little over a month ago. It is from a shoot with Dave at the Old Welland Canal. I've been busy the past couple of days so was looking for something to post from my archives when I saw this image and knew it would look great in black and white.

This is a photo of my brother James taken at our family Christmas party. I have converted the original colour photo to a Sepia toned image.
I have updated this image. It was originally processed on a different computer whose monitor was not colour calibrated and with software I wasn't fully familiar with. I didn't like it once I saw it on a better monitor. The original can be found here

21. Coleus in Black and White
Coleus in Black and White. This type of plant really works well in black and white I think. I remember shooting them when I first started out in photography. I think they are a great subject for beginners, and a great subject to learn to print in the darkroom with as well.
20. Front Street
Front and Market Streets, downtown Toronto.

10. Self Portrait #4
I had some portraits to do for homework this week... I am always an available model for myself. I really need to get a decent background.
November 8, 2005
08. Clouds in the Sky
In keeping with my attempts to recreate the infrared look, I dug around through some older images last night and found this one that was suitable for transformation. I think it is missing a subject, but the look is what I was after.
I posted this originally back in May, in colour. You can see that here.
November 7, 2005
07. Twenty Mile Creek
A shot of Twenty Mile creek near Balls Falls. I like the conversion to Black and White on this one much better than the colour version. Having shot some Infrared film in the past, this is very similiar.

27. Morning Coffee
This idea came to me last night, though I don't know where it originated from, I am not a coffee drinker.
October 26, 2005
26. Stairs of Escher
I am not sure if MC Escher modelled his paintings on the Museum of Natural History in London, or if the Museum of Natural History in London was designed based on the artist's work, or it is just that this view produces that effect.
October 14, 2005
14. Plaster, Sewer and Drains
While I have been playing around with black and white this week, I also had a renewed interest in slides when I picked some up from the lab. The colours were so vivid! I'll see what I can do about scanning a few shots that I don't otherwise have in digital.
October 13, 2005
A turnbuckle in monochrome.
October 12, 2005
I haven't had much chance to shoot this week... this is from the Letchworth trip back in August.
October 8, 2005
Portraits are one of my toughest challenges. Technically, my skills are decent. However, posing and working with a model I find very difficult, I am sure it is the introvert in me.
This is Katie, one of two models I had a chance to photograph this morning. I was happy with the portrait in colour, but want to explore the world of black and white a little more closely. It may be part of the lull I have been feeling that I talked about yesterday.
September 11, 2005
I went out this morning with John and Scott. We found a couple of Eastern Tailed Blue's and a Sulphar, but that was about it. Saw a few dragonflies flying as well... looks like the season is almost over for the insects.
All of which has nothing to do with this picture, which is a staircase outside of the abandoned Rosberg's Department store in Niagara Falls.
September 9, 2005
09. Downtown Niagara Falls
Dave and I were out shooting downtown last night for a short while. Our goal was the old Police station on Park Street and Zimmerman Avenue and the old Rosberg's department store on Queen Street and Erie Avenue, though I only got one or two shots of that one.
This shot is looking up Erie from Zimmerman. The older buildings and the derelict sign caught my attention. This was one of the first shots before I moved in and grabbed some detail shots of the signs. I wasn't sure how to treat this photo, and came up with three other version I was liked. This was my favourite.
September 8, 2005
08. A Little Wrinkly
The 1.6 multiplier effect of the digital sensor on my 10D allows me to crop in tightly to shots I would not normally be able to get. This photo of an elephant at the Toronto Zoo would have needed to be taken with a 480mm lens, which is too rich for my pocketbook! However, I really do miss the wide angle shots that I can't get with my current lenses.
I was looking at my old Pentax ESII last night, for which I have a very wide 21mm, and some very nice prime lenses... I may have to shoot some film soon!
August 19, 2005
19. Railing Detail
This is a detail shot of one of the railings in London's Museum of Natural History. It is one of the most beautiful buildings I have been in. The ornate construction is amazing. I could spend days there just photographing the building, and probably a week or doing viewing it's immense exhibits.
August 3, 2005
03. Winged Silhouette
I have been reluctant to post this one, though I really like it. I have had nothing but good comments from those that have seen it. I just wish I hadn't cut off the bottom of the wing.
July 16, 2005
July 14, 2005
This is another shot from Casino Niagara that I took with Dave the other night. I envisioned these photos as Black and White when I shot them, though I still really like the various colours in the rust.
Yesterday's shot from the same location.

01. Wood and Window
Scott and I were out this morning. Too warm for the bugs we are after, but it turned out to be a nice sunrise at Charles Daly Park, and I got a few nice shots of this building at Balls Falls Conservation Area.

Japanese Painted Fern. Taken at the Niagara Falls school of Horticulture.

09. Shadow of Fence
This week has been a pretty long one, I have being doing a lot of work at my parents house. Getting home so late, I really have not had a chance to shoot anything.
So... this was shot last summer during Construction Season in Toronto. I was going for a high contrast look, similiar to Kodak Technical Pan film can give.
May 18, 2005
Shot early morning, this piece of driftwood was well worn. A perfect candidate for black and white with the holes and the sand on the top.
I think my implementation was a little too dark though. Still unsure of it myself.
May 5, 2005
05. Rose and Shadow
Normally a harsh shadow like the one in the photo is not desirable in an image. For this one though I wanted to incorporate the shadow as a design element.
The image did not work in colour, so a conversion to black in white made the needed change.
April 3, 2005
This was shot in my studio while playing around with some lighting. I wasn't happy with what I was seeing on the camera screen but still wanted to see what I could make of the images. I am happy with the results.
March 20, 2005
Still sick today. I would love for nothing more than to get outside but my body is not allowing it. Great way to start a vacation!
Another basement studio shot. I am not sure if I like this better after making it monochrome or before. Any opinions?
March 16, 2005
16. A Piece of the Past
I have had a few requests for photos of the house. I fell asleep before getting to take any last night so this is one I shot the day I took possession. Probably not what they are looking for :). I guess they are more than welcome to start posting their own images...
March 11, 2005
11. Self Portrait #2
Keeping up with my self portrait exercise...
I have converted this to a duotone because I wasn't sure if I like the colour in it. A straight Black and White was also not quite striking enough for my taste's.
Those who have known me for a long time may remember this pose. I have a similiar shot from 10 or 11 years ago which I think was a stronger image.
March 4, 2005
04. Snow Covered
Another shot from Dufferin Islands (same location as yesterday's shot) here in Niagara Falls. The colour is a little different in this shot. I think it make the image look a little colder.
March 3, 2005
03. Winter Wonderland
This is what it has been like here for the past couple of weeks. I've spent 1 - 2 hours each day for the past couple of days shovelling snow, and I am running out of room to put it!
February 17, 2005
17. Ornamental Iron
Again, taken in Toronto, the shot itself was uninteresting in colour. I've created the bluish Duotone and played with levels a little bit to add some depth. Still not sure if I like it.
As for the house, I have over 100 new holes in my walls courtesy of the insulators yesterday.
February 3, 2005
03. White Bird
This is another shot taken at the Niagara Falls Aviary on the weekend. I played around with modifying the color space (now greyscale). Not sure if I like it as it is, it might be a little too warm.
