The glow of the warm morning sun reflects off the cold snow. This photograph depicts the contrast often felt in winter, cold as the snow and wind chill and the warmth of the sunlight beating down on your face.

I went out with my father last week. We missed the best part of the light, even though there wasn't much direction to it anyway. This is from that shoot.
I have shot this location in the past, but it hasn't looked like this. Most recently, my photo of John was shot here.

22. Sunrise Panorama
This is another panorama of a sunrise. This one was shot this past Sunday, again in Fort Erie. Fort Erie is about 1/2 hour south of Niagara Falls, in Canada, for anyone who may not know.
This image is a composite of 9 photographs. The photos were shot in a vertical fashion before stitching together. Once stitched and cropped to eliminate any areas without image (which usually happens when creating a panorama), I ended up with a 48.5 megapixel image which works out to be a 27 megabyte .jpg at maximum quality.
A larger version (but not fullsize) can be viewed here. View image

08. Geometric Illumination
Dave and I went out last night to catch up, have a drink or two, and get some much needed shooting in.
We choose to go the Fallsview Casino here in Niagara Falls. We have shot there before and wanted to try something different from our last shoot there. We drove up to the 9th level of the parking garage, then walked up to the tenth. This level was closed so we had a completely empty floor to work on.
I don't generally think of this casino as being architecturally significant though from this location there are a lot of angles working with each other. I don't believe this photo would have worked as well in the daytime as the lights on the casino building add splashes of reflected light as well as direct light from the casino hotel hallways.

26. A Nice Sunday Morning Drive
Shot this not too long ago. I liked the S curve the road and fence make. This was shot near Balls Falls which is about a 20 minute drive from Niagara Falls.
I can't believe that it is the end of October and only now are we starting to see some colour in the leaves. While out Sunday we noticed that some trees still look as though it is the middle of summer.

I have been looking for more inspiration in my photography. I've spent several years shooting the same subjects, same lighting and in all honesty, with my location, there is not a whole lot of variety.
So I have to look harder.
We'll see how it goes.
I have images for the next couple of days ready and will post as I get a chance, and I have some more shot but not yet processed.

01. The Old Mill
This is a photo of the Morningstar Mill at Decew Falls. I have photographed it before. Unfortunately, a power cable has been strung from the work shed featured here to the building on the right (not visible) that really distracts from the view, though you can't really see it here.

18. Reflection of the Beacon
This is a reflection of the Beacon in Jordan.
I received an email the other day from Chapters book store (now Indigo). They are selling photo books. These look like they may be the same books sold by Wal-Mart and Costco but I am not sure yet.
Leanne and I want to put our wedding photos into a book like these so I have been looking around for something that would suit our tastes, or I guess more specifically, my tastes!
As I was looking at the terms and conditions for the Chapters PhotoBooks, I quickly made the decision that they would not get the book business from me. Point 1 of their license and warranties section of their Terms of Service irrevocably gives them full rights to your photos. By using their service to create a photo book, for which you pay for, they will retain rights to use your images in advertising and promotion, without paying you a cent for them. This simply is not right.
There is a lot of discussion on the Internet between photographers about Royalty Free stock photography which is the business model where a stock agency will on your behalf sell a photo of yours for a fee (sometimes as low as $1.00) and then give you a portion of that sale, maybe only $0.20. As part of this sale, the buyer then gets to use your image in whatever application and distribution size or media they want. Just think of a company buying your image for $1.00 and using it in an international advertising campaign that targets 20 million viewers and makes them tens of millions of dollars.
And Chapters wants you to PAY them to give away your images like that.
John Harrington (Photo Business News and Forum) has written a lot on the subject of royalty free photos as has Stanley Rowin (Pro Photo Business Blog). Even if you are not a professional photographer, you should avoid establishments that take part in this practice. You certainly wouldn't give anything else away for free. Also, by participating in practices like this, you are propagating the idea that building in wide ranging releases into a TOS contract for a service you are using is okay. It simply is not. The retailers need to know this.
Comments anyone?
UPDATE: I checked the TOS for both Walmart Photobooks and Costco and neither one retain rights to your images the way that Chapters would like to. What a better way to tell Chapters than to buy your photobooks from other retailers.

I don't know if this was ever used in and type of pirate activities, but if you ask someone from the Niagara Area if they know where the pirate ship is they will know what you are talking about.

11. Morning and the Ship
If you have traveled along the Queen Elizabeth Way between Niagara Falls and Hamilton, you will have noticed an old apparently abandoned sailing ship sitting in the Jordan Harbour outside of St. Catharines. The ship was torched by vandals several years ago and will likely sit where it is now until it rots completely into the harbour.
I have a few shots from that morning. This is the first and is an HDR composite of 8 different exposures.

The weather has really turned around in the past week or so. Last Sunday we were shooting in cold, snow, then this Sunday we had rain, and the fog you see here. In between, all the snow had melted and my crocuses sprang up, as did chutes for my daffodils. What a difference a week can make.

30. Duck and Reflection
This will hopefully be one of the last (if not the last) shots from Dufferin Islands in this series. I am happy with some of the others, others I'd like to reshoot, but I am getting bored of them. It's a good thing my camera came back yesterday! This shot seems a little too busy in the background to me. A shallower depth of field would have been more ideal.
I look forward to shooting and not having the associated costs or in turn, because there is a cost, the associated compression of my freedom to shoot. While I should not let cost govern what I shoot, the reality is, I am more likely to experiment on something if there is no cost associated with it.

24. Reflections in the Water
Reflections of trees in the water.
I have been working on this site since sometime in January, with it's first posting February 1st. I've posted 235 shots or so from around Niagara Falls, Toronto, London. I have nature shots, portraits and some sports. Some days I find I am not really interested in putting up another image, and some days I find out am not interested in going out to shoot, which was the main goal of the site for me; to get me out more often. But then when I get out there and find a good subject, things all just fall in to place for me. Such was the day when I took this shot.
Dave and I went out and I was looking to shoot because the camera was going into the shop, but not really that into it. But once I started shooting, and everywhere I looked I was seeing different things, the excitement came back all over again.

20. Port Dalhousie Dusk
Port Dalhousie, just outside of St. Catharines, Ontario, is a popular summer spot for tourists and locals alike. The marina, just off to the right of what you see in this shot, is home to many sailboats. There is a large concrete pier that juts out into Lake Ontario where you can see many people walking along, some fishing and on a clear night see Toronto across the lake. There is a beach that plays host to several volleyball tournaments throughout the summer, and the original carousel can still provide a few minutes enjoyment for the young and young at heart for only a nickel. The area has become a popular summer nightspot with people driving in from Niagara Falls, Welland and surrounding areas. Lakeside Park was immortalized in the early 70's by the Canadian Rock trio, Rush

Dave and I were out shooting downtown last night for a short while. Our goal was the old Police station on Park Street and Zimmerman Avenue and the old Rosberg's department store on Queen Street and Erie Avenue, though I only got one or two shots of that one.
This shot is looking up Erie from Zimmerman. The older buildings and the derelict sign caught my attention. This was one of the first shots before I moved in and grabbed some detail shots of the signs. I wasn't sure how to treat this photo, and came up with three other version I was liked. This was my favourite.

These are the middle falls (there are three seperate water falls in the park) at Letchworth State Park in the finger lakes area of New York State. The Genesee river flows through the canyon, over the three waterfalls through the park. While there, we saw the Mt. Morris dam which is about the height of Niagara Falls. It can hold off an amazing amount of water (filling the to the top of the dam for 17 miles).

30. Stream at Duff
Leanne and I were at Dufferin Islands on the weekend, a nature area just up river from Niagara Falls. It is always a little amazing when I see an area like this so close to a developed area like the tourist district in Niagara Falls. There are streams similiar to this running throught the islands, plus a small river with a few water falls. They have done much work in the past few years to naturalize the area, adding bird feeding stations and bird boxes, introducing fish into the waters (with a catch and release program as well) and planting indigenous vegetation in the park.
