30. Duck and Reflection

20050930.jpg

This will hopefully be one of the last (if not the last) shots from Dufferin Islands in this series. I am happy with some of the others, others I'd like to reshoot, but I am getting bored of them. It's a good thing my camera came back yesterday! This shot seems a little too busy in the background to me. A shallower depth of field would have been more ideal.

I look forward to shooting and not having the associated costs or in turn, because there is a cost, the associated compression of my freedom to shoot. While I should not let cost govern what I shoot, the reality is, I am more likely to experiment on something if there is no cost associated with it.

29. Niagara River

20050929.jpg

Another image of the upper Niagara River, similiar to yesterday's. This spot is about a kilometre up river of Niagara Falls, and the water begins to get quite rough here. I tried to bounce a little bit of light on to the rock in from with my flash to avoid the black hole look but it just didn't happen.

Still no word from Canon on my camera yet, I think withdrawal is setting in, or at least pocket book weightlessness! I had forgotten how much of a pain it is getting film processed and printed, then reprinted because the printers think they know what they are doing. Servers me right for not spending $24/roll at a professional lab. I guess proper exposure on my print is too much to ask for from a big box printer.

Last night was the first competition of the year at the Niagara Falls Camera Club. 24. Reflections in the Water

20050924.jpg

Reflections of trees in the water.

I have been working on this site since sometime in January, with it's first posting February 1st. I've posted 235 shots or so from around Niagara Falls, Toronto, London. I have nature shots, portraits and some sports. Some days I find I am not really interested in putting up another image, and some days I find out am not interested in going out to shoot, which was the main goal of the site for me; to get me out more often. But then when I get out there and find a good subject, things all just fall in to place for me. Such was the day when I took this shot.

Dave and I went out and I was looking to shoot because the camera was going into the shop, but not really that into it. But once I started shooting, and everywhere I looked I was seeing different things, the excitement came back all over again.

20. Port Dalhousie Dusk

20050920.jpg

Port Dalhousie, just outside of St. Catharines, Ontario, is a popular summer spot for tourists and locals alike. The marina, just off to the right of what you see in this shot, is home to many sailboats. There is a large concrete pier that juts out into Lake Ontario where you can see many people walking along, some fishing and on a clear night see Toronto across the lake. There is a beach that plays host to several volleyball tournaments throughout the summer, and the original carousel can still provide a few minutes enjoyment for the young and young at heart for only a nickel. The area has become a popular summer nightspot with people driving in from Niagara Falls, Welland and surrounding areas. Lakeside Park was immortalized in the early 70's by the Canadian Rock trio, Rush

16. NSX

20050916.jpg

Dave and I were out last night for a couple of hours and I managed to get a bunch a good photos. I still don't think I have enough new material to get me through my upcoming digital-free period, but I should get through at least half of it. I am hoping I can convince them to put a rush on it when I drop it off.

With that being said, I have dipped into the archives today. This is a shot I took last summer while on lunch at work. It is a custom wheel on an Acura NSX that was parked in our lot. This was shot with a Fuji Finepix 3800, not my usual Canon 10D.

15. Sulphur

20050915.jpg

I started my class last night. I am not sure why I had the impression, but I didn't expect it to be so much like school used to be. But, it is class just as I remember them being (it's only been 5 years).

Tonight I am heading out with Dave to do some shooting. It'll be the last digital shooting I do for a while as I have to take the camera in for repairs tomorrow. Canon has told me it could be up to 6 weeks, even though this is a known issue. I am very unhappy about that. So, I'll be going back to film.

14. A Rainbow of Colours

20050914.jpg

This is another shot of the Sulphar I posted on Monday. I find it amazing just how much colour is really in these butterflies. When I first looked at it, it was a pale yellow, almost brown, but this image shows its true colours, yellows, greens, reds, blues plus some purple and brown.

Tonight I start a 12 week portraiture course. I have to say that it is my weakest photographic technique and I have always thought people are the hardest subjects to shoot.

13. Eastern Tailed Blue

20050913.jpg

This Eastern Tailed Blue was in excellent shape. Often they have nicks out of their wings from attempts from being eaten. The small tails are actually a diversion. They will move them up and down to mimic their antennae so a predator may only nip the back of the wing, rather than a more critical near the head nip!

12. Early Morning Sulpur

20050912.jpg

As I mentioned yesterday, the season is about over for the insects. This is one of two butterflies I shot yesterday. We were at the Wainfleet Bog on Erie Peat Road in Port Colborne where we have had some pretty good luck over the past few weeks. I have a couple different shots of this butterfly and one more of an Eastern Tailed Blue to post.

11. Staircase

20050911.jpg

I went out this morning with John and Scott. We found a couple of Eastern Tailed Blue's and a Sulphar, but that was about it. Saw a few dragonflies flying as well... looks like the season is almost over for the insects.

All of which has nothing to do with this picture, which is a staircase outside of the abandoned Rosberg's Department store in Niagara Falls.

09. Downtown Niagara Falls

20050909.jpg

Dave and I were out shooting downtown last night for a short while. Our goal was the old Police station on Park Street and Zimmerman Avenue and the old Rosberg's department store on Queen Street and Erie Avenue, though I only got one or two shots of that one.

This shot is looking up Erie from Zimmerman. The older buildings and the derelict sign caught my attention. This was one of the first shots before I moved in and grabbed some detail shots of the signs. I wasn't sure how to treat this photo, and came up with three other version I was liked. This was my favourite.

08. A Little Wrinkly

20050908.jpg

The 1.6 multiplier effect of the digital sensor on my 10D allows me to crop in tightly to shots I would not normally be able to get. This photo of an elephant at the Toronto Zoo would have needed to be taken with a 480mm lens, which is too rich for my pocketbook! However, I really do miss the wide angle shots that I can't get with my current lenses.

I was looking at my old Pentax ESII last night, for which I have a very wide 21mm, and some very nice prime lenses... I may have to shoot some film soon!

This is one of the meadowhawk dragonflies I mentioned last week. As this is the first year I have started shooting insects, it was an exciting find. The first dragonfly I posted back in July I did not actually find, but as my eyes are becoming tuned to what to look for, these creatures that camouflage themselves so well now are appearing to me.
